What are you reading? What strategies do you use when you are reading over at R.C.M.S?

Fill us in over here at R.C.I.S. and we will fill you in, too!

Tuesday, 3/27/12

Thank you for all your emails! I enjoyed reading them. I am glad you enjoyed the pictures. I will be sure to put a few more up during spring break. Some of you asked for pictures of Ethan's room and the dogs.

I encourage you to check out the blog over your break if you have time. Have a great week off. Remember to READ, READ, READ!

Also...I want to be sure that everyone is doing what they need to be doing during the Daily 5 Rounds. Remember what you are expected to do. Check the posters if you forgot. We do this to become better readers and writers!

Today's reading thoughts...

If you could ask any character in your book a question, what would you ask? Why?
OR
If you could ask the author a question, what might that be? Why?

Have a great week!
It's PERFECT! :)

Tuesday 3/20/12

I know you worked hard to respond last week, and it didn't work. So this week I would like you to just to submit an email to me. You can fill me in on anything you would like.

When it asked you to put in an email address, you can put mine, alexandria.pierik@rc255.net. You could put your name @rc255.net. It doesn't matter. Any will work.

I look forward to hearing from you. I miss you guys, but know you are doing great with Mrs. Corlette. Remember that my expectations for you have not changed. Keep up the good work.

As for Ethan and myself...we are doing great. We have taken a couple trips to the doctor for checkups. We are both doing very well! I hope you can see some of these pictures I am about to post.

Have a great week!
Thanks to Ms. Graff for all her hard work on letting you use this blog!

Similes & Metaphors

We have been focusing on similes and metaphors in our room. We really understand a simile, but we are still having a hard time finding metaphors in our reading. We kindly used an idea from another teacher to listen to the story, You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. It was very helpful and fun! So, if you have a metaphor you would like to post, please share! Students...I would love to hear the metaphors and similes you have found in your reading! It would be even better if you could tell me how it helped you understanding your reading! Happy metaphor and simile hunting!

Book Club

A group of students and myself started a book club where we are reading, Chasing Vermeer. Our group focuses on the strategies, make a connection and infer meaning in text, although we use many other strategies while we read. Every week we meet and compare our thoughts and strategies. Below is an outline of what the students came up with each week. If you are interested, jump on it and share with us what you find!

My Goal...

What are YOU working on as a reader? How? How is it going?

IPICK

One way we know we are picking the good book for our individual needs is by using the IPICK strategy. We understand that not all books fit every person. What one student might be reading might not be a book another can or wants to read.
I - I picked...
P - Purpose
I- Interest
C- I comprehend what I am reading
K- I know the words

Try it out and see if you can find a GOOD FIT Book

What Are YOU Reading?

We are quite the readers in Room 503! I have added books to our library that  I know we are  or have currently read. As students read these books, I encourage them to post their thoughts and opinions. This is a new concept for us. Please check back in often to see the different books we are reading and what we think.
