A group of students and myself started a book club where we are reading,
Chasing Vermeer. Our group focuses on the strategies, make a connection and infer meaning in text, although we use many other strategies while we read. Every week we meet and compare our thoughts and strategies. Below is an outline of what the students came up with each week. If you are interested, jump on it and share with us what you find!

Chapter 1-3:
DeleteConnections:We made a text to self connection. We connected to Petra's family life. To help us build her character. We also made a text to text connection to Found about how they would have felt about getting a mysterious letter and not having it signed.
Inference:We made a inference about how Ms. Hussey was a little clueless about how to teach. Then we infered on the inference before and thought that Ms. Hussey was creative.
Tuning into Interesting Words:We tuned into pretentious and we think it means impressive. We tuned into stationery. We think it means something to write on. Another word we tuned into was decisive and we think it means good. We also tuned into hybrid and we think it means coming from different cultures.
Questions:One question we made was what does it mean by the letter is dead. Another question we made is who sent the letter.
Predictions: We think that Ms. Hussey is one of the people that got the letter.
Confirmations:
The chapters we are going to read are 4-7.
DeleteP.S. sorry we forgot.
Your bookclub
Chapter 4-7:
DeleteConnections:We connected to help visualize. We also connected to how Denise rolls her eyes when she thinks something is dumb.
Inference:We inferred that Denise is not a nice person. We also inferred that Mrs.Sharpe is one of those people that when shes done talking about something you are too.
Tuning into Interesting Words:We tuned into Credulity and we think it means cruel. We also tuned into premises and we think it means length of land.
Questions:Who kidnapped frog?
Predictions:We predict that Petra and Calder will become friends.

ReplyDeleteI know things didn't work last week. That's okay. I would like you to just keep going. Keep up the great work. This week for your blog entry, dont fill in the form, just write to me about your thoughts. The second letter, so chapter 3 letter we thought we came up with is wrong. Check that over. Let me know what you think the letter are so far for the odd chapters you have read. Remember, "It's odd, but even". How are you liking the book? Have any of your questions/predictions come true? What do you think is going to happen?
Then next week you can go back to the old format. Be sure to still go over your connections and inferences in a group with Mrs. Corlette if you meet, or you 4 together. Those are your goals. Keep up the good work!
