Similes & Metaphors

We have been focusing on similes and metaphors in our room. We really understand a simile, but we are still having a hard time finding metaphors in our reading. We kindly used an idea from another teacher to listen to the story, You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. It was very helpful and fun! So, if you have a metaphor you would like to post, please share! Students...I would love to hear the metaphors and similes you have found in your reading! It would be even better if you could tell me how it helped you understanding your reading! Happy metaphor and simile hunting!

  1. Bree,
Thank you for your email about your metaphor. I love that you are trying to find metaphors in your reading! You are on the right track. Although, your quote was not a metaphor because it was not comparing two things.
"The indain's eyes were black and fierce and frightened." If it had said they were black and fierce and frightened monsters, then it would be comparing the eyes to the black, fierce, and frightened monster. Does this make sense? Keep up the great work!

  2. Here are some fun metaphors some of my readers and I have found and talked about...
    - My family lives in a medicine chest.
-Dad is the super size band aid, strong and powerful but not always effective in a crisis.
-Mom is the middle size tweezers which picks and pokes and pinches.

What do you think each one means?

  3. Dear Mrs. Pierik,
I have finally found your blog on my ipod an i think its awesome and -my family lives in a medicine cheast- i think that means like my family has a lot of medicene in their house and stuff and dad is strong and protects us but not so working when the family is in a crisis. I also think how mom is the middle size tweezers is how moms always try to make everything perfect

  6. Dear Mrs. Pierik,
I found a cool simile while I was reading to my brothers in How to be a Pirate. It was one of the how to train your dragon books. The simile is Dogsbreath was as mad as a harpooned whale. I don't know if Tammy or Meghan already gave it to you but I wanted you to know I found a simile.
